--Artist Statement-- As an artist, I try to paint images that stimulate my curiosity about nature and society. My paintings are an expression of who I am as a person and the process of applying paint to a canvas gives me an opportunity to capture a moment, translate it to a surface, and tell a story. My technique includes studying imagery through observation and photography, as sources of inspiration. I enjoy painting en plein air (outside), but I prefer the solace of working in my studio where I am not affected by the weather, the changing light, or the occasional stray dog. My painting technique utilizes loose brush strokes that tend to create an image that falls somewhere between impressionism and photorealism. My brush strokes are intended to create texture and movement when viewed up close. But when viewed at a distance, the strokes blend together to create a smooth transition from one color to another. To put it simply…I like my paintings to look “painterly.” --Memberships-- Flint Institute of Arts, Greater Flint Arts Council, National Oil & Acrylic Painters Society, Oil Painters of America, and Shiawassee Arts Center.
