I am a father to three boys and a have been married for 22 years. I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art from Calvin College in 1995, a Master of Divinity from Calvin Seminary in 2003, and am currently working on my Doctor of Ministry in Professional Education and Leadership at Ecumenical Theological Seminary in Detroit. For the past six years I have worked with children, adolescents, and adults in an inpatient mental health care setting in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I find it rewarding to be with people in their healing and challenging to be with people in their pain. For good self-care, I enjoy creative process-rich hobbies like baking sourdough bread, brewing kombucha, or making art. Often the ideas for my art begin in emotionally painful places. Time to create helps me process these emotions more deeply and begin to articulate them more clearly. Compounded by current events in America, I have become more aware of white privilege and various power dynamics between those serve in caring capacities and those receive care. My ArtPrize 2018 piece, Four Brothers, explores these dynamics.
