I think that my interest in color and shape comes from my childhood, and I've tried to hold onto this feeling in my paintings. The picture plane is where my imagination acts out these feelings, as I'm emboldened by the possibilities of juxtaposing and overlapping contoured color forms on a two-dimensional surface. The color in my painting is prismatic, bright and luminescent. The color's opacity, along with the markings and scratchings on the surface, mark this as an interior space, a mirror rather than a window, where light is reflected back at the viewer. The space depicted is a private place, its meaning derived from the disinterested substance of the paint. I painted this without a preconceived plan, inventing and recycling the shapes within the context of the painting. Working in this way enabled me to draw and invent the forms in color on the surface, without drawing them first. I was surprised, thrown off balance, but in the process uncovered the underlying theme of unity.
