I enjoy scientific illustration because it combines my lifelong passion for both art and science. Inspired by the works of Ernst Haeckel and John James Audobon, my primary subject matter is birds, mammals, and plants. My goal is to realistically depict flora and fauna in great detail. When I illustrate animals, I strive to capture their spirit and unique character. I work as a freelance illustrator but my full-time job is Professor of Biology at Grand Rapids Community College. At Morton Publishing, I am also the author and illustrator of a four-book series called the Visual Analogy Guides that cover the fields of anatomy, physiology, and chemistry. I was born and raised in Grand Rapids and currently live with my wife and son in Ada, Michigan.
