Untitled
2012 ArtPrize EntryFor over a decade, Varga Weisz has been building a symbolically charged visual language influenced by a diverse range of sources including literature, contemporary media, art history, folklore, and religious and architectural iconography. Most often featuring unusual portraits of surreal human and animal figures, Varga Weisz challenges the conventional conditions of portraiture through constructing a cast of both real and imagined characters. In this work made of uniformly glazed ceramic, Varga Weisz continues to channel themes of subjecthood through playfully combining the figure of a face with abstract architectural elements, evoking the intuitive process of a form in the making.
