Mother and Child

We often forget that all of us start off in this world as little tiny babies. This intimate portrait of mother and child portrays a universal maternal love. Long before the art world existed as we know it, artists toiled sometimes for years on a single work that held beautiful spiritual values. Although a contemporary artist, Prokopenko is unusual in that she creates in a similar way. Through the painstaking attention to the smallest of details, she has recreated the lovely paradigm of maternal love in this work. The work is a micro-mosaic in glass, which means the thousands ofpieces of glass are tiny, some are as small as 1/16 of an inch. These are glued one at a time with the use of tweezers. No grout is used because the pieces are fit very tightly with exacting precision. The work pictured in the above photo is a work that Prokopenko created several years ago, it is an approximation of how the current work will look when finished. See additional photos for actual work in progress.
