Detroit Today

2011 ArtPrize Entry

My portfolio includes nearly two hundred unique photographs taken over a four-year period in my quest to better understand Detroit. Dozens of trips to Detroit have left me confused. Whether the entire set is displayed or just some favorites, my hope is that they are visually poetic. Detroit, rich and complex, is my passion. The images represent my fascination for discovery and my personal growth. The story behind each photograph offers a glimpse into the most misunderstood city in America. My work ranges from photojournalistic to capturing unique architecture and graffiti messages conveying raw human emotion. Detroit's eighteenth century Latin motto when the city was ravaged by fire is,“Speramus Meloria, Resurget Cineribus." The translation, "We hope for better things; It shall rise from the ashes" is still true today. Visit my Facebook account - Project Detroit, Flint and Travel Bug are open albums. This will truly give you a feel for my eye. (
