Brilliantly crafted poetry and photographs will take you on a contemplative journey to examine Detroit’s place in this world. Three to five groups of compelling photographs taken by experienced photographer Nicholas Gregory will be centered around verse written by award-winning Detroit poet Deonte Osayande. Waking Detroit is a title that holds several meanings. Wake means to be active and to stay alert as well as to watch over. Both artists will compose pieces based on differing perspectives, shared goals and work inspired from one another. We offer raw and authentic expression intended to generate feelings and encourage dialogue. The display will be creative, imaginative and true to our mission to help people discover the beautiful complexity of Detroit through a moving exhibit. This portfolio includes past work with several images that will not be included in the final project. Many pictures for this project will be taken in July and August 2013 to complete our body of work.

Venue & Connection Information

Collaboration with the host is an aspect of this project that we take very seriously. Both the poet and photographer would love to engage the public in a talkback and live poetry reading if the venue has interest. The dimensions can be changed to fit the venue's needs/space. We want the venue to be happy with our work and pleased with the process of working with us. Although the dimensions are listed as 12'x6' - that can be expanded or changed easily. The photography can be made to the expectations of the venue. In addition, canvas prints, gallery mounts or framed art can be created. Good lighting will help tell the story. In addition, we are able to create a multi-media presentation incorporating video if that is desired by the venue. Photographs may be framed in original Detroit artifacts (if the venue desires) and the poetry will be displayed with the photography. (Exhibitor DeVos Place 2012, Top 25 Art Prize 2011, Hillside)
