This artist is a young man whose passion has been painting and creating art from a young age. It allows him to move freely as he makes colors splash across the page. Miles is developmentally disabled and has been multiply-handicapped from infancy. He creates his artwork with the support of Western Michigan University Occupational Therapy students. Occupational Therapy students are ideally suited to assist Miles to be as independent as he can, while interjecting as little of themselves into his art work as possible. That being said, we do consider his work to be a collaboration. Miles uses a large variety of adaptive equipment, and techniques, and he is involved in nearly all aspects of his art work, including building canvases, tearing and cutting paper for his collages, and some framing tasks. He has created a lot of artwork over the years and he has sold 7 different pieces thru exhibitions in Grand Rapids. He enjoys both watercolor and acrylic and most of his works, are multimedia. Collage and oil pastel are also utilized in many of his creations. Recently, he has been newly inspired and energized by working at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts under the tutelage of Kenneth Freed, with Hannah Reinhold as his support. His current focus is in acrylic painting. Last year friends, and family assembled for his birthday, to assist him in building a very large, (5' by 7') canvas, assisting him in screwing 2x4s together, and stapling the huge canvas on the frame. This is the work in progress, he has entered into Art Prize. His entry will include multi media to show and express how he is able to create his artwork.
