A Commemorative Coin To Travel The Length Of A Marathon Through My Digestive Tract (33/4,576)

2013 ArtPrize Entry
Add to Collection

The object is formed using a lifelong process that makes use of the body's digestive system as a sculptural apparatus. Over the past three years I have cyclicly swallowed and digested a single commemorative coin thirty three times to date. Alongside the physically accrued marks made with each pass, The Coin (a term I use in the absence of correctly defining such a thing) becomes more and more precious as a result of it's repeatedly intimate passage through my body. As an open pipe of plumbing, ass-to-mouth, The Coin is perpetually “outside” my body, never permeating through membrane nor tissue, as to be considered “penetration.” Considering this negative channel that runs throughout, the body can be understood as a torus - I am a doughnut.
