Surrogate
2012 ArtPrize EntryAs a sculptor and installation artist, I implicate viewers in a phenomenological situation, in which the experience of objects is ambiguous, corporal and direct. During the last year I have been developing works that consider our increasingly tenuous connection to the natural world. My objects and imagery spring from a handful of sources in which actual and mediated visions of animals and landscapes blur. They are the product of a suburban imaginary and of an accompanying narrative that positions nature and culture at two extreme ends of a spectrum. This polarization paints Nature as an ideal; a space or thing unadulterated, authentic and real. In the context of recent works, this distorted notion refashions itself into a strange brew of fantasy, nostalgia and denial. Melting icebergs, mutating lawn ornaments, patches of parched earth, neon signs and reflective caution tapes pronounce clear ecological devastation, not a romanticized Eden.
