ARTIST STATEMENT I feel blessed to have a degree of God given talent doing something I love. When viewing my art the intention is for the viewer to go beyond the literal image and experience the subject on an emotional level. The changing light and the ever changing moods it creates is the foundation of my paintings. To me, art is a synthesis of personal feelings and subjective interpretations of color and light. Painting is a meditation on a subject by trying to capture the tensions between light and shadow. My art expresses the sensibilities of beginning in reality while working toward an image that speaks to the emotional aspects of a subject through the language of paint. I try to approach each new painting with no expectations or formulas beyond communicating impressions and personal perceptions to the viewer. I try to take a literal image and transform it into an emotion. This allows me to see what new collaborations between paint, subject, and attentiveness might produce. I am always entranced by color, pattern, and the interplay of shadow and light. While I as an artist begin a painting, it is the viewer that completes it. When that is accomplished, the creative circle is completed. The style of painting I have developed over the years can be described as semi-realistic impressionism.
