"Welcome Home", a 8'x10. 5’ panel, pencil illustration, containing ten individually mounted portraits of Vietnam veterans of various branches of service is mounted around a large graphite drawing of an American Captain, holding a young Vietnamese orphan. The men and women that served in this war and their unwavering dedication, kindness, and generosity to the forgotten children of Vietnam are the inspiration of this piece. Inspired by their courage, hope and strength, Michael embarked on a unique humanitarian endeavor through his art talents. As a small expression and token of gratitude for their service, his pieces reflect and capture these American soldiers during their tours, amplifying their compelling and moving stories that were not publicized by the public and media. Michael credits his work to these Vietnam Veterans and his family for his growth and accomplishment with this journey. “It is humbling, an opportunity to honor to express my deepest gratitude and appreciation for their sacrifices through the drawings that is long overdue. It is my hope that it will bring some comfort and healing to those that served in this unpopular war.” Photo of soldier and the Vietnamese orphan provided by Bruce Bartow.
