2013 ArtPrize Entry

I am intrigued by the effect that long endured stress, anxiety, guilt, loss, and responsibility have on the physical human condition. while I note that this phenomena is shared among many of those having held the office of president, this effect is most prominent in Lincoln. I wanted to capture that time when these effects had begun to wane; the war has ended, and a new hope prevailed for the burgeoning nation, as well as it's people whose ranks were now joined by millions who were previously in bondage. A new challenge worth undertaking. I imagine he is sitting for a portrait, and tried to duplicate that transition of feeling from sadness, remorse, and worry, to one of anticipation and hope. I imagine him pondering a humorous anecdote, but he hesitates in telling the artist, after being admonished to be still. The joke is never told, the painting never quite finished. He will be dead in three days.

Venue & Connection Information

I can and will be present on a daily basis to me and greet the public at my venue site. I have done so for the past three years at Artprize. Not only do I personally derive much pleasure from this practice; I have found that the public is most appreciative when the artists are present to discuss their work and answer questions about it, or to discuss Art and Artprize in general.
