Recess Community

Melody Schmidt and the Steil Club Artists

Play became this artwork's theme because it offers an infinite number of positive benefits, from getting fun exercise to learning how to get along and build friendships. With the young members at the Youth Commonwealth of Grand Rapids Boys and Girls Steil Club, sharing our many memories of playing outside at recess blossomed into a unanimous consensus that this single activity is probably the most important part of our school day. I agree! After creating this playground, I assisted the children in sketching kids to bring the playground community alive. My love for volunteering at the Steil Club stems from my own memory of building lifelong friendships at school "back in the day" and my passion for helping urban youth own these same experiences. I am the wife of a native Grand Rapids Westsider and the mother of 3 grown children who make me proud every day! I also am a 4th grade teacher at Sibley School and an Ed. Specialist in Leadership graduate of Grand Valley State University.

About Melody Schmidt and the Steil Club Artists

Spending a few fun hours a week with a flexible group of 3rd-6th graders at the Steil Club helps us all value contributing in small ways to a big idea while enjoying a common passion that unites through self expression in the arts. Each week we explore a meaningful theme that helps us grow as community members, such as the inspiration to get out and play!
