The Spaces of Sound (Thank You Mr. Cage)

2013 ArtPrize Entry
Add to Collection

I am proposing a kinetic work for the Vertical Project Space inspired by John Cage and the physicality of stairs. I will create various lengths (up to 49’) of tubes using Slinkies linked together and enveloped in translucent abaca paper skins. Colored LED's, threaded within, will respond to the cadence and volume of people traveling on the stairs. The tubes will move up and down subtly, creating a rhythmic and calming motion. At night, the piece will simply glow for an atmospheric effect.
