A lifelong Chicagoan, Mary Ellen Croteau received a BFA from University of Illinois at Chicago in 1990 and an MFA from Rutgers University in 1998. She has lectured and exhibited internationally, and has won numerous awards. Her art has been reproduced extensively, and has recently gone viral on the internet. She has been working with post-consumer plastic trash since 2003. She hopes to raise awareness of the problems created by our waste, and encourage conservation and creative re-use. Her other passion is making art accessible to everyone. Since 2003, she has run a window gallery, bringing fine art into her working-class Chicago neighborhood where passers-by can see work by contemporary artists of many disciplines, from many countries.
