2012 ArtPrize Entry

ICARUS, generally speaking, represents failed ambition.

In this piece, the medium chosen gives a different take to this Greek Myth. Using beer caps to represent how we as humans ignore warning signs, from the mundane to the monstrous, that ultimately lead us to our demise.

Started in February of 2011, with a hand built wooden frame. From there, 6 aluminum sheets were procured from a local printer to be used as the canvas. The sheets are wrapped around the frame, and screwed down. Adhered to the aluminum canvas using construction adhesive, are approx 8,000 beer bottle caps. Each cap has been flattened by hand using a hammer and a piece of wood.

ICARUS took over a thousand hours to complete.

Unlike mosaics done in a similar style, there is no painting underneath the caps. A black outline of Icarus is the only thing drawn on the aluminum.

I'll be transporting the piece in a hand built crate, via truck & trailer from Pittsburgh, PA.

Venue & Connection Information

The work will be transported by me to the venue. I'm not a professional art installer, but the piece is heavy, so it will require proper hanging.

There are two industrial strength D Rings on the back of the frame on either side to aid in the hanging process. It is possible to be set on the floor or shelf of some kind, but it must be stable, supportive & secure.
