Mark is the youngest of 11 from Jackson, Mi. Mark's sister Susan (Vainner) Coolbaugh attended Kendall School of Art & Design when it was on College St. Sue brought projects home & his brother Robert says "The little brat always had to have a project to do too." Pottery artist Sandy Beaman & her brother artist Leland Beaman of Stone Village in Jackson had a huge impact on Mark. Heritage Hill drew Mark to Grand Rapids after graduating Lumen Christi High School. Mark is inspired by Mark diSuvero's work. Favorite materials are wood & metal. Mark met his wife Suzanne in 1989. Suzanne & her Mom volunteered with opening & working at the Race Street Art Gallery, now The Urban Institute for Contemporary Art. The entire experience of installing our sculpture at the B.O.B for the inaugural ArtPrize was Amazing. Talking with people about what we love to do, hearing over & over that our piece belongs at Meijer Gardens & watching people take pictures of our sculpture is a time we will never forget. #U at the Ford Museum was a life altering experience as well. Suicide is such a painful subject and #U gave us a chance to discuss it in a bright and current way.
