Note: these are work in progress photos Gogo and the Ancestors: Artist Statement The evolution of this piece revolves around Gogo, the central figure in so many families. “Gogo” is the Zulu word for Grandmother. They are shadow figures who carry their children’s children through the streets while selling goods to commuters. I realized what strength we women have in common, to be brave and to face the world out there in spite of our circumstances at home and in; to confront our personal sorrows, and yet, be positive and brave in spite of all odds to give our best to our children and the world around us. I feel coherence with them, a part of their Sisterhood. This piece is an expression of the beauty, strength, and traditions of not only Gogos but, of all South African women. The piece is Oil and Mixed mediums with beads on hardboard. The finished size is 4.5’w x 3.5’h.
