21 Soldiers

We interact with quilts in a very personal way. We form an intimate connection with these textiles by cuddling beneath their layers. This quilt explores the sacrifices made by 21 men in my family (fathers, grandfathers, uncles, first and second cousins). In it I wanted to address the seasons they gave up to serve others in domestic and foreign lands; to emulate the physical environment they encountered and altered; and to provide a more tangible experience of their memory than conversation offers. Each deconstructed military garment was cut and re-sewn to form the top, sacrificed to tell a different story. The design resembles aerial views of farmland. And the materials are all sustainable: recycled, repurposed, or biodegradable cotton, batting, and thread. While US military actions are always scrutinized, I hope to remind viewers of the individual men and women serving among us. I hope that someday my children can snuggle up in their stories.
