The Nature of Glamour
2012 ArtPrize EntryI am fascinated with our culture's "lust for glamour". Celebrities appear on the covers of grocery store magazines who have no other discernible skill but being glamorous. Unlike beauty, glamour is transitory and illusionary. Beauty reflects inward while glamour reflects outward. What function does glamour fulfill? Can it be an end in itself? While we are drawn to both beauty and glamour, the later is a guilty pleasure. The two appear to be polar opposites, however one could not exist without the other. The essence of each relies on the contrast of the nature of each. My Artprize piece is a functional hand thrown teapot made non-functional by a surface encrusted with glass beads and gold luster. It will be displayed on a mirror in a box with 3 mirrored sides.
