Offering in Celebration of Mostly Grey
2012 ArtPrize EntryDESCRIPTION - 88 bowls, 8lbs white rice, 8lbs black rice: An installation of 88 wheel-thrown stoneware bowls arranged on the gallery floor in a 8 x 11 grid. Each bowl contains uncooked rice. White rice in the first row of bowls, black rice in the last row of bowls. A combination of white and black rice in the other bowls, in proportions so that the grid is a graduated white-to-black. ARTIST STATEMENT - As a small child growing up in multi-cultural Singapore, I would sometimes stumble upon bowls of rice left as offerings by my neighbors. Sometimes on a step, sometimes in a tree ... just waiting to be discovered. Who were they left for, I wondered. Now that I have experienced more of our wonderfully complex and diverse world, and realize how lucky we are that few things are truly black or white, it is my turn to make an offering. Of rice born from the earth. In bowls made of the earth and shaped in my hands. An offering in celebration of ... mostly grey.
