Born and raised in Grand Rapids, I built my first sandcastles on the shores of Lake Michigan -- but I had to move to Texas and experience the sticky sands of the Gulf Coast to discover the artistic talents I never suspected I possessed. Over the past 30 years I have shoveled sand on such far-flung beaches as Tasmania, South Africa, Qatar and Taiwan. I have competed against the best sand sculptors in the world - without embarrassing myself - and I have witnessed the transformative powers of a well-organized pile of sand on both the artists as well as spectators. More recently, I have experimented with different ways to make my sculptures stand up to extreme weather and casual vandalism, to achieve what I like to call "semi-permanent" status. And now I am eager to return to Grand Rapids and show my homies what I have learned in the past 3 decades by creating something big and beautiful from native Michigan sand as part of the Art Prize project.
