Bird on Wire
2011 ArtPrize EntryThis piece includes a half-scale replica of a historic diving tower with a nursery-grown tree hanging upside down from the interior. One small, artificial bird will perch on the end of the diving board. A hotpink disk at the bottom, painted with auto-body paint, will reflect parts of the tree. My work usually plays with imagery that evokes a confused sense of nostalgia, which makes the viewer consider the value of truthfulness in recollection. Trees grown in nurseries are valued for height rather than health or width, so this narrow hanging tree will feel precarious and weak, which speaks to our odd relationship with nature in a largely manufactured world.
