A Mile in Her Shoes
2012 ArtPrize Entry“A Mile in Her Shoes” represents a perception of downtown urban living with particular interest in walkable, bikeable communities and establishing a sense of community and place. This multi-medium collage captures the many layers of symbolic details, moments and thought processes within downtown Lansing, Michigan. With over 7 years of traveling by bicycle and foot, hundreds of miles have been logged. The line work on the reverse side outlines one month of travel categorized by exercise, commute and entertainment. The panel it overlays celebrates the general historical boundaries of my neighborhood, including an acrylic painting with an organic self-portrait sketch illustrating where my life best resonates. Historic photos and maps are used with permission from the Historical Society of Greater Lansing. A special "thank you" is in order for my father Paul Benck and wonderful boyfriend Matt Assenmacher who helped me with the engineering logistics of the display box.
