2012 ArtPrize EntryMy current practice explores the world of jobs and work. It seems that we need it, love it and hate it all at the same time. I am particularly interested in examining the rise of corporate culture as well as the experience of the individual in the corporate environment. Personal experience, social anthropology and psychoanalysis all contribute to my approach. Many of my ceramic sculptures begin as drawings which I then use in conjunction with the industrial force of an extruder to create 3 dimensional forms. Using the low status, dirty and tactile material of clay in this way allows me to work on large as well as small scales. The process can also be seen in the final sculpture and metaphorically mirrors many of my ideas around corporate pressure and workplace conformity. It is our considerable industrial ceramic heritage - with its once endless production lines, specialised technology and remarkable output that provides many of my ideas regarding process.
