Fading Warriors

2011 ArtPrize Entry
Add to Collection

My painting, "Fading Warriors", is a mural of portraits of local WWII veterans from the 32" Red Arrow Division. These men fought in the Pacific and shared their experiences in a film production by GVSU students called, "Nightmare in New Guinea". It's a powerful film that describes the challenges these men encountered in the jungles of New Guinea. My father, Jack Hill, is one of the heroes interviewed for the documentary. It's my objective to honor these men by capturing not only their likenesses, but also focusing upon their inner strength, their essence, and the reality that after 65+ years their memories of those experiences are as vivid as ever. I worked with watercolor, gouache, charcoal, and pastel. I also included photos from the documentary that I collaged in. There is an abstract feeling of disappearing as many of these men, like my father, have passed. Their stories need to be preserved.
