My work connects everyone to the four cardinal points on the traditional Medicine Wheel. This Aboriginal teaching is also known as the Four Sacred Directions, which is represented among the Ojibwe people by the colours; yellow, red, black and white. For this work I chose the colour black. The colour signifies the west EPANGISHMOK. The western direction is the adult stage, the berry stage. It is here that the growth from summer has come to ripen. It is then the time of harvest, and so for much of creation the physical journey is over, and that life crosses back into the spirit world only to sleep until the cycle begins again. The Medicine Wheel teaches us many things, such as the need for balance in the world, and the balance we must strive for everyday within ourselves. The commonality we have is the four directions that evolve from the centre and ultimately return to the centre to complete the circle of life. This is how we will come to truly appreciate and understand one another.
