Kerry Skarbakka (1970) was born in Duluth, Minnesota. His performance-based photographic work depicting existential anxieties and loss of control through the acts of falling, drowning and fighting have been exhibited internationally. A 2005 Creative Capital Grantee, his work is held in such collections as the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, The North Carolina Museum of Art, The Corcoran Gallery of Art and The Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago. Skarbakka has appeared on live interviews on FOX, WGN and PBS. In 2009, he was interviewed by Matt Lauer on NBC's Today Show and on 'Today on Sunday' from Australia. Given the cover and of such notable publications as Aperture, The Missouri Review and Genti di Fotografia, his work has also been featured in many other important journals, books and magazines including Afterimage, Art and America, ArtReview International and Yvi Magazine. Evidenced by his contribution to the medium of photography, his work was included in Here is Always Somewhere Else, a documentary film by Rene Daalder about the artist, Bas Jan Ader, as well as, After Photography, a documentary film series by Stan Neumann and Juliette Garcias, co-produced by the Centre Pompidou. Online media coverage of his work has been extensive including The Huffington Post, Wired, Slate, ThisCollosal, the Guardian and many others. Skarbakka received his BA in Studio Art (emphasis in Sculpture) from the University of Washington School of Art and his MFA in Photography from Columbia College Chicago. Kerry Skarbakka lives in Corvallis, Oregon with his wife and son. He serves as an Assistant Professor of Photography at Oregon State University.
