I am a self-taught painter with my artistic approach being rooted in the twin disciplines of realism and illustration. I have worked with graphite, charcoal, colored pencil, watercolor, gouache, and markers but have focused primarily on acrylics since learning about OPEN acrylics that, unlike conventional acrylics, do not dry quickly. This "open" time allows for more traditional blending and achieving subtle gradations. Architectural design and illustration are the basis of much of my professional life, which included serving as an architectural designer with Disneyland and designing Japan stores for Starbucks. After a lifetime in the architectural field, in late 2012 I decided to pursue my lifelong dream of being a full-time working artist. During that time, I dusted off a 30-year-old idea and started exploring that vision in my “I DO Know Jack!” series. I have been truly blessed since making that difficult decision to follow my heart as my series has found a success that I hadn’t dreamed of. •••••• In 2015, soon after being in the final Top 25 2D Public Vote at ArtPrize 7 with the first five paintings in my series, I won the 2015 MI Great Artist Award sponsored by Oakland County Michigan and Park West Gallery, the largest privately owned gallery in the world. Paintings in the series have won two Best in Show Awards and two People’s Choice Awards in Michigan and National competitions. •••••• In addition, paintings from the series have been selected by North Light Books in conjunction with The Artist’s Magazine for inclusion in their internationally distributed “The Best of Acrylic Painting” series of books AcrylicWorks, appearing in AcrylicWorks 3 and 4 and selected for inclusion in AcrylicWorks 5 which will be released in 2018. •••••• Seven of the first 9 paintings in the series were also selected for inclusion in the Richeson75 Exhibitions in 2016 and 2017 with A Pair of Jacks chosen for the cover of the 2016 Still Life and Floral Exhibit book and Jack of Diamonds chosen for the Title page in 2017. •••••• Jack the Ripper was juried into the 34th Annual Michigan Fine Art Competition in Birmingham, Michigan. •••••• Jack and Coke is currently in a juried show at Las Laguna Gallery in Laguna Beach, California through July 2017 for their 2017 "Spectacular" exhibit. •••••• The first 10 paintings in my I DO Know Jack! series (along with some of my older paintings) are on exhibit at the Henry Ford Hospital, West Bloomfield, Michigan May thru July, 2017 as part of their Healing Arts Program. •••••• My biggest break came when serendipity connected me with Dan Gilbert’s rebuilding of Detroit. A subsidiary of his corporation owns and manages a series of casinos in Ohio and Michigan that have all been re-branded to JACK Casinos under the subsidiary JACK Entertainment. They have purchased limited digital rights to the first ten images in my series and also similar rights to all new “jack” images that I create through 2018. These limited digital rights allow them to reproduce, frame and display my artwork at their casinos and corporate offices. Enlarged reproductions can currently be seen at JACK Casino Cleveland and JACK Casino Cincinnati. (Most of the original paintings are still available for purchase.) •••••• I am currently a member of the National Oil & Acrylic Painter’s Society. •••••• Video URL showing the first 10 paintings of I DO Know Jack!: (Copy and paste into your browser) - http://bit.ly/IDKJ-First10
