My inspiration and interests The ‘birthing’ of many of my sculptures begins with eyes closed and surrounded in silence. Then I experience what can best be described as this ‘blank canvas of thought’ – and I begin to see images of beings. These beings then become more solid and realistic as I sculpt. We have been taught for so long to believe that the only way to learn and grow spiritually is through pain and suffering – through tragedy. From simple phrases like “no pain, no gain and midlife crisis” to phrases like “The dark night of the soul,” we have come to believe and accept that struggle is the only avenue of genuine personal growth and meaningful, positive change in our lives. I believe with all my heart there is another path that we can follow, and that is the path of beauty – an inner beauty that speaks of wonder, while whispering of serenity and inspiration. Many of my designs and sculptures are expressions that convey this other path we can choose – a journey towards peace, love and harmony. There are of course struggles and hardship along the way, but they are not a necessity and can become less frequent and harsh. I want my art to have a positive impact on those who experience it so their world may be brightened, and perhaps shift their focus just a bit more toward all of the beauty that surrounds us – and is a part of us as well.
