Defining Baggage

Joseph Ivacic's avatar Joseph Ivacic

The installation is comprised of luggage that house glass objects. The objects in the suitcases are representations of things that define our lives. Each of us has been shaped by our interactions that we have had with those that surround us along with their baggage. Each piece of luggage and each has it’s own type of objects within it. Some of the objects in the suitcases are boxing gloves, bottles, bones, and keys. The objects represent the fights that we’ve had, our addictions and ways of coping, the things we hide from others, and our responsibilities. The mirrored objects invite the viewer to see oneself within the piece. The outside of the luggage is worn and tattered and speaks to long years of companionship and adventure. Each inside is luscious and well maintained, preserving the memories and events that shape us as individuals. The piece ultimately is about our willingness to opening up and share with those that are worthy.
