I never really considered myself as an artist. I never took any elective art classes, and lacked any ability to draw or paint. I thought even the stick people I drew were ugly. Though I didn't consider myself an artist, I always enjoyed other individuals' art whether it was fine etchings, paintings or sculptures. Though I thought I lacked any artistic ability, my eyes were always drawn to the beauty of the natural world, whether that beauty was in a small pebble, sands sculpted by the wind, a deep forest stream's jumble of rocks, or the light cast by the setting sun. Even when I first began "playing" with my rocks, I didn't actually consider them as art pieces, but simply nice looking use of the rocks I'd gathered over the years. Because other individuals viewed my put together rocks as distinct individual sculptures to be enjoyed, I was encouraged to build more for myself, and also for others.
