Conceived in the year of the Dragon but born in the year of the Snake. "Monty, a 100% "green" sculpture was completed in 1800 hours in 44 weeks, has over 12,500 hand cut scales using recycled multicolored shipping containers, and weighs 4000 pounds. Monty, a happy Clumber spaniel dog, passed away unexpectedly from cancer the day I left for ArtPrize 2012. Being an avid dog and dragon lover, it upset me to see my wife's life long friend Johny Borek, and his partner Brian Topolewski so distraught. They welcomed the idea of me creating a sculpture to immortalize their dog, by transforming him into a flying dragon. Like his big brother "Norm, the green dragon" I placed a heart inside "Monty" to represent his playful, sweet soul. Life is full of uncertainties, so always follow your dreams and go for it! I am excited to go after the 2013 ArtPrize brass ring with a large, dramatic flying dragon sculpture, with hopeful thoughts of capturing the love in the hearts of the people in Grand Rapids.
