Veteran vibraphonist, composer and educator, Jim Cooper has played vibes for 40 years, leading numerous groups, appearing as both soloist and sideman. Among the many jazz artists he has performed with include Ira Sullivan, Chicago pianist Bob Dogan, Art Van Damme, Paulinho Garcia, Larry Vuckovich, Detroit clarinetist Dave Bennett, The Grand Rapids Jazz Orchestra, concerts sponsored by the Jazz Institute of Chicago and Buddy de Franco / Jon Faddis and the Chicago Jazz Ensemble. As a Delmark Recording Artist in the early 1990s, Cooper gained recognition with two CDs Tough Town and Nutville, both featuring the legendary multi-instrumentalist Ira Sullivan. A Downbeat Magazine review called Cooper, “a warm vibist who goes for the heart.” As an educator Jim was jazz band director and arranger for the Lake Michigan Jazz Lab Band from 2001 - 2006 and recently celebrated his 10th year as a Jazz Band Director at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. He lives along Lake Michigan with his wife, Gini.
