I was born in Mexico but grew up in Toledo, studied art and graphic design in high school; painting, graphics and printmaking at the University of Toledo. Art has been my life and my sanctuary. It's been my livelihood, primarily as a graphic designer, a craft that has honored me with various national and international awards for my designs. Where my design work is very representational, my fine art paintings and prints, such as my ArtPrize entry are very abstract and expressionistic. Artistically, I feel fortunate to be able to live comfortably in both my figurative design world and in my abstract fine art world. In art, my early influences were the colorful Mexican folk art in paper, pottery and fabric that adorned our house. In my search for identity as an artist I was influenced by the work of the great Mexican muralists, Rivera, Orosco, and Siquieros. As a young artist, I was also highly drawn to the European Expressionists, especially to my favorite artist, Franz Marc, to his use of color and to his beautiful portrayal of the natural world. My work has been exhibited at the National Center for Nature Photography, the Toledo Museum of Art and at various exhibitions and galleries. I am represented by galleries in Ohio, Massachusetts and California. I consult and have served on design and art review panels for the Toledo Arts Commission and for the Ohio Arts Council based in Columbus Ohio.
