The experience of being on the ground, or in the air, at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta® attracts hundreds of thousands of people, truly from all over the world. My artistic challenge for Art Prize is to bring the excitement of the field of balloons to canvas that is 6-feet tall and 20 feet wide. This subject also allows me to delve into my passion for history, merge it with my passion for art, and produce a historical narrative. All of this satisfies my desire to create a work that can be understood on multiple levels: Compositional design;  Color and shapes;  Light and shadow;  Movement and texture;  Sequence and process of ballooning;  Documenting historical accomplishments;  Portraits of ordinary people and ballooning celebrities. To gain permission to portray specific balloons and people, I contacted balloonists from around the United States, and indeed the world. Their stories and photos fill my notebooks, and enrich my spirit.
