The Washing Line
2012 ArtPrize EntryMy entry consists of a large wall hanging made from felted merino and silk fibres; a young woman in red, fighting a blustery day to hang old love letters on a washing line. I have "drawn" into the wall hanging with machine embroidery. In addition to the wall hanging, I will also create felted washing lines which will have individual hand felted letters on them, each felt letter will be embroidered with words. I hope that viewers will un-peg letters to read them. The piece relates to the feelings of love lost and the memories and remnants of a love affair that can be returned through a kept letter or memento. The initial inspiration was a line from the song "A Town Called Malice" by The Jam. The felting process is entirely done by hand, I source my fibres from farms that are known for the good quality care of their animals, some from Michigan. Felt is a sustainable fabric.
