The Progress of Man

This piece is a monument to the great challenges we face as we struggle for a balance between our dependence on energy and the protection of our natural environment. In this conflict there are no easy answers but the stakes are high on all levels. For some, there is a sense of impending doom, nature being the only refuge, but, with respect to the complexities of the issue, it is also a depiction of Americans turning their backs on domestic manufacturing, leaving others to benefit financially, but also to shoulder the environmental burden. In the right panel, short-sighted oil executives get payed while little effected themselves by the environmental and economic hazards that are inevitable, as witnessed in the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. It is my hope that this painting will inspire more people to become engaged in this debate. These issues become more pressing daily and we must work to strike a balance between environmental, social and economic interests.
