James Corbiere

Prince George, BC, Canada

I am Anishinaabe from Manitoulin Island (Lake Huron) My Anishinaabe name is Waabi Makoohns or Little White Bear and I belong to the Bear Clan. The stories of my people provide the inspiration for the artwork I do, and the artwork I do has only recently begun, with my first piece created in November 2015. I work specifically with eastern White Ash, using markers, hiliters, and inks. The wood speaks to me. He, or she, tells me the stories and all I do is connect the dots, or translate the stories to the images. Some stories are complex, and the story for this artwork is the most complex, as it spans ages of time. I lived in the U.P. (Kincheloe) for a few years before moving back to Soo Ontario, where I was a high school teacher. I recently moved to the West Coast to be with my wife and am looking forward to coming back to the traditional homeland for the ArtPrize 10 event. Please come see us! Thank You! Miigwetch!
