After 35 years as an elementary art teacher, I am currently training the next generation of art educators at Aquinas College. For decades I have been creating abstract and stylized figures. This year's entry was originally designed to express interest and concern with the current state of public education. As this sculpture developed in my mind's eye and on my workbench, the essence of education emerged as a rhythm: remembering and forgetting, instructing and absorbing, acquiring and discarding. My hope is that viewers of my art will engage in their own rhythms of search and discovery, and will share with others their own patterns of observing and expressing, watching and perceiving, listening and speaking.
