Silverwareback Sentinel, Girlilla and Tiney
2011 ArtPrize EntryYou've heard of silverback gorillas. This is a silverwareback gorilla. He is standing sentinel over his domain. What does a 105 lb. gorilla eat? I don't know but he can eat it with a fork! There are over 1000 forks alone in the male gorilla. His lady friend, Girlilla, examines a leaf on a bamboo stalk. They are unruffled by the exploits of Tiney, their rambunctious baby. My sculptures are about things that I enjoy – wildlife, welding, and humor. Hoveyware is appreciated first for its form and personality. On closer inspection, the details of the flatware bring enjoyment on a whole new level. I enjoy watching people marvel over how eating utensils can be transformed into art. Sculpting keeps me feeling productive and gives me motivation to persevere despite debilitating disease. My work seems to be able to engage a wide audience, from artists to children and even men who may not have previously shown interest in the art world - or so their grateful wives tell me.
