Every Seat has a Story

2012 ArtPrize Entry

Shel Silverstein's story, 'The Giving Tree,' was the inspiration for this art piece. The message engraved on the seat back serves as a tribute to the generosity of the many families who have given so much to make this community a wonderful place to live and visit. This bench is also a testament to Grand Rapids' past as a logging center and furniture capital of the world in the 1900's. The faded water on the reverse side represents the tree flowing down the Grand River approximately 100 years ago. The wood itself, a white pine and our state tree, displays the beauty that Michigan has to offer from it's wooded trails to the shoreline of the Great Lakes.
