Wasteland IC IV

2012 ArtPrize Entry
Add to Collection

What we do and what we say we do can be two different things. My work explores the hidden inner workings of the technological age, exposing the aesthetic and difficult nature of cyber media. Using trash as a metaphor for global and environmental choices, I stitch impractical quilts from circuit board that describe the contemporary world as a confusing, but beautiful, place where ramifications our actions are unclear. Size is an important aesthetic choice. My most recent work has grown in to mural-sized designs that allow the viewer immerse himself/herself in detail at close ranges, while enticing panoramic scans of the entire composition at distances. Each board can be appreciated as a separate artwork, but is undeniably unified to the whole, creating what Allan McCollum calls “simultaneous double perspective”.

Venue & Connection Information

“Wasteland: Inscrutable Complexity IV” (“Complexity IV”) is a mural-sized piece that stretches H 108” x W 180”. It is nearly complete and can be seen in the photographs on its working table awaiting final assemblage of the last of its completed panels. To allow the committee to see strength of my portfolio, along with the progress of my proposed “Art Prize” piece, I have uploaded several works. I have used “Wasteland: Inscrutable Complexity II” as the lead in photograph. Although this piece is smaller, it is a good stand-in for “Complexity IV’” There are very few restrictions with this piece. However “Complexity IV” is over 300 pounds. It is easily hung on a cleat, hanging system designed for the weight, or, suspended with braided wire from a ceiling, wall, lintel, balcony, or fulcrum of your choice. I can rig a pulley system to hoist it off the ground and am willing accommodate just about any architectural necessity. I am easy to work with (can provide references).
