"Light Along Our Path"
“Light Along Our Path” is a symbol of how each of us is affected by the light of others who touch our lives… directly or indirectly. Whether we are in the shadows or in the bright sunlight we are who we are because of the light of someone who has made a difference in our lives. I took the photo I used for this work while on my 39th mission in the Dominican Republic with GVSU students and other young adults from the D.R. during which we built and painted homes for the poor, put cement floors in homes where there had been only dirt floors, held medical clinics, worked in schools, etc. One day while visiting the construction sites in the mountains I came across this scene which caught my eye as a vivid example of the simple beauty of the poor whose lives we were privileged to share. The light that emanated from these simple, financially poor, and beautiful people became one with the light of our own lives…and together we made up this tapestry of quiet and connected light and shadow.
