I came to Detroit in 1978 to obtain a PhD, followed by a ~30-yr academic neuroscience research career. I lived in downtown Detroit from 1978-1994, and in Ann Arbor since 2011. I have trained over the past 7 years with regional and national professional artists in diverse media, most recently ceramics (Mentor: Yiu-Keung Lee), as well as oil and cold wax painting (Mentor: Jerry McLaughlin). My paintings and sculptures have appeared in 9 prior exhibitions (6 juried, 3 curated), and 2 non-juried venues. My porcelain sculpture, Bagladies Votive was installed in Fountain Street Church during ArtPrize9. My works derive from my intrinsic responses to life and death, the physical world and importantly, the evolving artistic image or form. Extrinsically, this range of internalized emotions is expressed and continuously revised using a variety of tools and media that includes slip-cast porcelain as a principle sculptural element. Contemporary non-representational forms and social themes inspire both my abstract visual imagery and provocative, conceptual sculptural forms.
