2012 ArtPrize EntryThe rotary drill bit has been used in well drilling since it was invented by Howard Hughes Sr. in 1909. It revolutionized the oil industry, and helped fuel the american dream. In recent years. It contributed to the Gulf oil disaster, and has helped save the lives of many miners needing emergency air shafts and supplies. In the future, rotary drill bits will drill ever deeper wells that will produce polution free geoththermal steam power. Like many inventions, the rotary drill bit can be used wisely or can bring about great harm. It is up to us to use indrustrial processes in a way that is environmentally friendly, and beneficial to our future.
