Wisdom Means No Separation

2013 ArtPrize Entry

Is there really a separation between each of us or is that an illusion that makes our lives more neatly packaged and easier to maintain? Do we each base our decisions on the idea that we are connected or do we see each person as a separate entity? This assemblage/painting integrates a sculpture of the Madonna with Malala Yousafzai. Malala is a Pakistani student and education activist; she is also the youngest nominee for the Nobel Peace Prize in history. When she was 15, a Taliban gunman boarded her school bus and shot her. The Taliban wanted to teach a “lesson” to anyone who had the courage to stand up for education, freedom and social justice for women. The sides of the painting are covered with embroidered quotes from world religions. Each quote states that achieving social justice within ourselves and our society requires us to have the wisdom to realize there is no separation.
