Untitled Blind Bust

2012 ArtPrize Entry
Add to Collection

Continuing my investigation into the precarious boundary between what's there and what's not there, I have made my work in reverse order: with the pedestal first. In part, I began working with the pedestal because it seemed a completely foreign concept to me. My work was not fit for pedestals, so I decided I make the pedestal fit my work. With these new bronze busts, I have removed the function of the plinth but still maintain the form. I began working with the figure because it too was a foreign body. My work had often suggested the figure or implicated a body. However, I was never comfortable giving the figures heads. The head is where we generally "locate" our self. I made a series of busts, which I sculpted "blind" under a box, hidden from my judging mind. I wanted to learn how my hands and mind make decisions without my eyes. In the same way that I wanted to remove the pedestal but maintain a sense of its presence, I wondered how much of myself I could lose and still be there.
